Well I think that can be said about the A-6 Intruder. The A-6 Intruder is a twin jet-engine, mid wing-attack aircraft that was built by Grumman Aerospace. The A-6 was in service from 1963-1997. The Intruder was actually designed as the all weather replacement for the already successful A-1 Skyraider. The A-6 saw its first action during the Vietnam War. Due to the aircrafts long range and heavy payload (18,000 pounds) and with its ability to fly in any kind of weather made it invaluable during this war. Although the plane did have its faults, unable to fly low and deliver its payload made the aircraft very vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire. In the eight years the Intruder was used by the US Navy and Marines, 84 intruders were lost. The last Intruders were retired on February 28. 1997. Several of the retired A-6 frames were sent to Florida were they were sunk off the coast of St. Johns County. These frames then formed a fish haven that was entitled Intruder Reef. But, contrary to popular belief, there are some surviving aircraft that were fitted with new wings and stored at the AMARC storage center at Davis –Monahan Air Force Base and were indeed not sunk to become artificial reefs. Now let’s talk about the specifications of this great plane. The A-6 was 54 feet and 9 inches long, it stood 16 feet and 2 inches high, its wingspan was 53 feet the empty weight was 26,746 pounds and the max weight was 60,400 pounds. There were 2 engines on these planes that had 9,300 pounds of thrust each. The range for these planes was 1,010 miles, the cruise speed was 474 miles per hour, the max speed was 644 miles per hour, the climb was 7,620 feet per minute and the ceiling was 42,400 feet. If you would like to see one of these planes up close and personal you can find them at, NAS Atlanta, Museum of Flight in Seattle Washington, and San Diego Aerospace Museum in San Diego California.
