A-7 Corsair II Model Aircraft You don’t have to be large and mean looking to be useful. Take the A-7 Corsair II for instance, this is an example of good things coming in small packages. After all, it got the nickname SLUFF (short little ugly fat fellow) for a reason. This aircraft became the most accurate strike aircraft ever built to this day. The A-7 Corsair II is a carrier-based subsonic light attack aircraft that was produced to replace the A-4 Skyhawk. Interestingly enough the A-7 was the first ever combat aircraft to display a heads up display, which can be found in some cars today. The A-7 was first used in December of 1967 in Vietnam and it quickly proved to be the most effective Navy close support and strike aircraft in Vietnam. This remarkable plane also saw combat during Desert Storm. The A-7 demonstrated a 95% operational readiness and did not miss a single combat sortie. This wonderful aircraft also has the ability to conduct in-flight refueling operations and it is capable of transferring at least 12,000 pounds of fuel. Now let’s talk about the specifications of these great planes. The A-7 was 46 feet and 1.5 inches long, 16 feet and 1 inch tall, with a wingspan of 28 feet and 9 inches. Its empty weight was 19, 111 pounds and the max takeoff weight was 42,000 pounds. The speed of the A-7 was 685 miles per hour, with a ceiling of 45,000 feet and a range of 3, 224 miles. It was equipped with one internally mounted M61A1 20 mm six barrel cannon, six wing pylons, two fuselages launch stations, and could carry a 15,000 pound payload. This great plane flew its last flight in 1993 for the United States, however, Portugal and Greece still use these planes.
