AT-6 Texan Article: Do you know which plane is one of the most important aircraft of all times and is universally recognized? Well if you answered the AT-6 Texan you would be correct. This famous plane was originally built in1935 as the NA-16. This great plane was in production for nearly 10 years and in active use for more than five decades. The Texan was primarily used for training purposes but it still got its fair share of action in the Korean War and in the Vietnam War. In the early 1950’s the Texan received its latest modifications and the last model of the Texan was the T-6J. This was produced for the United States Air Force. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force equipped the Texans with smoke and white phosphorous rockets and used the plane as forward air controllers. Which you can still see this today if you attend air shows, the Texan has been a participant in air shows since World War II. Many Texans have also been used in movies like Tora! Tora! Tora! and The Final Countdown. There were 15,495 Texans built all together, the USAAF produced 10,057 of them and the rest went to the Navy and more than 30 Allied nations. The Texan still remains one of the most widely used aircrafts in history. This showstopper is 29 feet long, 11 feet 8 inches tall, with a wingspan of 42 feet, an empty weight of 4,158 pounds, and a loaded weight of 5,617 pounds. Its max speed is 208 miles per hour, with a cruise speed of 145 miles per hour, it has a range of 730 miles and a service ceiling of 24,200 feet. And it is equipped with one .30 inch machine gun.
