Details about the Harrier II Airplane: The AV-8B Harrier II is considered to be one of the most unique and widely known military aircrafts out there. This one of a kind aircraft was built to do specific tasks and do them well. The AV-8B Harrier II was designed to conduct close air support by using conventional and specific weapons, conduct deep air support, which included armed reconnaissance and air interdiction, by using conventional and specific weapons. It was also able to conduct offensive and defensive antiwar warfare, which included combat air patrol, armed escort missions and offensive missions against enemy ground-to-air defenses. It was able to operate and deliver ordnance at night and operate under instrument flight conditions. It is also one of the few aircrafts that can be deployed for extended operations due to its ability to do aerial refueling. Lastly, the Harrier II was able to be deployed and operate from carriers and other suitable seagoing platforms, advance bases, expeditionary airfields and remote tactical landing sites. This aircraft had its most success during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The Harrier II flew 3,380 sorties that totaled 4,083 flight hours and was able to maintain a mission capable rate in excess of 90%. The average airtime for this incredible aircraft during the ground war surge was 23 minutes. This great aircraft was 46 feet and 3 inches long and stood 11 feet and 7 inches high with a wingspan of 30 feet 3 inches.
