Mirage III Airplane History:

The Dassault Mirage III was a supersonic fighter aircraft that was designed in France by Dassault Aviation in the 1950’s. The Mirage III was manufactured in France as well as number of different countries and was a very successful fighter aircraft that remained in production for over a decade. Some countries air forces actually still fly Mirage III’s.

The Mirage III came about in 1952 when the idea of a lightweight, all weather-interceptor, that was capable of climbing to 18,000 feet in six minutes or less and that was able to reach mach 1.3. The prototype of the Mirage III had her maiden flight on November 17, 1956 and was able to reach speeds of Mach 1.52 on her seventh flight. However, in May of 1958 the Mirage IIIA was clocked at Mach 2.2, which made her the first European aircraft to exceed Mach 2.

The Mirage III is 49 feet 3.5 inches long and 14 feet 9 inches tall, with a wingspan of 26 feet 11 inches. Her empty weight is 15,600 pounds. Her max speed is Mach 2.2 which is 1,460 miles per hour, with a range of 1,500 miles.
