F-4E Phantom II "VX-4" Aircraft (Navy) History:

The F-4E Phantom II made her maiden flight on June 30, 1967. After that flight the F-4E became the leading Phantom model, and 1,839 planes were built. The first ever F-4E was delivered to the Air Force in October of 1967. The new and improved Phantom model can equipped with an additional fuselage fuel tank, leading-edge slats for increased maneuverability and an improved engine.

In the early 1960’s the F-4E Phantom II made her debut with the VX-4 Evaluators who were a U.S. Navy Air Test and Evaluation Squadron that was based at NAS Point Mugu. Their tail code was XF. The VX-4 Squadron was brought together in 1950 in New England for the development of an airborne early warning system. But the squadron was disestablished later that year. However, they got a second chance in 1952 when the VX-4 was reestablished in NAS Point Mugu. While she was there she conducted evaluations of air-launched and guided missiles. IN the 1960’s they tested operational test and terrain clearance radars, Doppler navigation systems and air-to-air distance measuring equipment.

The F-4E Phantom II served the Evaluators for nearly three decades. In 1990 the F-4E was replaced by the F-14D Super Tomcat.
