Their sole mission is to provide offensive air support, armed reconnaissance and air-defense for the Marine expeditionary forces. The Squadron was first brought together as a Marine Night Fighter Squadron on March 6, 1944 during World War II. The group initially flew a AV-8A Harrier. It wasn’t until November of 1963 that the squadron started to train with the F-4B Phantom. The VMFA-542 squadron has flown several different aircrafts over the years, including the F6F Hellcat, F7F Tigercat, F3D-2 Skyknight F4D-1 Skyray. As of today they are still flying the F-4B Phantom and the squadron is still active today. They are currently stationed at the Al Asad Airbase in Al Anbar Province helping to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. The squadron has participated in several engagements including World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The squadron likes to go by the name of “Tigers” and will usually have some sort of Tiger embossed on their jacket or clothing. References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMFA-542
