F-4J Phantom II "VMFA-451" (Marines) Airplane History:

Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 451 also known as VMFA-451 was a fighter squadron for the United States Marine Corps. They were known as the “Warlords” and “Blue Devils” This particular squadron participated in World War II and Operation Desert Storm. The squadron was decommissioned on January 31, 1997. Her roles involved close air support, air interdiction and aerial reconnaissance.

The Warlords turned to McDonnell Douglas on February 1, 1968 and turned in their current Crusaders for the F-4J Phantom II. The Phantom had a remarkable safety record of 29,000 accident-free hours and served the Warlords for 23 great years. However, they traded their Phantom’s in for the F/A-18 Hornet in September of 1987.

The F-4 was 62 feet long and 16 feet 6 inches tall with a wingspan of 38 feet 4.5 inches. Her empty weight was 30, 328 pounds and her loaded weight was 41,500 pounds. Her max speed was Mach 2.23 which is 1,472 miles per hour and she cruised at speeds of 585 miles per hour. She had a ferry range of 1,615 miles and she was also equipped with three external fuel tanks.
