There were stationed at the Naval Air Station Lemore. Their roles were close air support, Air interdiction and aerial reconnaissance. She was part of the Carrier Air Wing 2 and their motto was “Go Ugly Early” and their colors were black and yellow. The Squadron participated in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. It wasn’t until 1981 when the Vigilantes transitioned to the F-4S Phantom. Before then they had been flying the F-4J variant of the Phantom. The Vigilantes squadron made history on March 24 of 1986 when they flew off the USS Midway for the last time as the VF-151. This flight marked the end of an era, as it was the last flight of the F-4 Phantom II. The squadron was later re-designated Strike Fighter Squadron 151 (VFA-151) on June 1, 1986. The F-4 was 62 feet long and 16 feet 6 inches tall with a wingspan of 38 feet 4.5 inches. Her empty weight was 30, 328 pounds and her loaded weight was 41,500 pounds. Her max speed was Mach 2.23 which is 1,472 miles per hour and she cruised at speeds of 585 miles per hour.
