She was manufactured by North American Aviation and her primary users were the United States Air Force. There was a total of 9,860 of them built and they cost 219, 457 to $343,839 per unit to make depending on the model. The F-86A set her first world speed record of 570 miles per hour in September of 1948. She went on to break a few more speeds records in her time. Test pilot George Welch exceeded the sound barrier on October 1, 1947 and on October 14, 1947 the aircraft sustained supersonic speeds in a level flight, which made her the first “true” supersonic aircraft. The F-86 was 37 feet 1 inch long and 14 feet 1 inch tall with a wingspan of 37 feet. Her empty weight was 11,125 pounds and her max takeoff weight was 18,152 pounds.
