This aircraft was developed for the United States Air Force for service in the Strategic Air Command during the late 1950’s. The B-58 made her maiden flight on November 11, 1956 and, even though she was equipped with very sophisticated technology and was capable of reaching Mach 2, she had some problems. The B-58 Hustler’s operational flexibility was limited by high costs and the constant changing mission requirements. This led to a short career between 1960 and 1969. The B-58 Hustler was retired on January 31, 1970 with only 116 of them being produced. Even though she had a very short career in the United States Air Force, the B-58 Hustler stands in a class of her own. She could fly faster than twice the speed of sound, she could pinpoint target from altitudes as high as 60,000 feet and could avoid radar in low-level near-supersonic flight at 500 feet and below. She also holds the record of cruising at higher speeds than any other bomber in the world. This one of a kind aircraft was 96 feet and 9 inches long, 29 feet and 11 inches tall with a wingspan of 56 feet and 9 inches. Her empty weight was 55,560 pounds with a max takeoff weight of 176,890 pounds. Her max speed was Mach 2.1 which is 1,400 miles per hour and she cruised at a speed of 640 miles per hour. Her Armament consisted of 1x20mm Ti17 cannon and 4xB-43 nuclear bombs, max loads were 19,450 pounds.
