B47 Stratojet Airplane Article:

If it hadn’t been for the B-47 Stratojet, the jets that most airliners use might not even exists. The B-47 was a huge innovation in post World War II combat jet design. It is what helped lead to the development of modern jet airliners. The B-47 Stratojet is a jet bomber that had a medium range and had a size bomber that was capable of flying at high subsonic speeds that was primarily designed for penetrating the Soviet Union. However, the B-47 didn’t really see much combat action in her day. She mainly remanded a mainstay for the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command in the 1950’s through the early 1960’s.

Like with most planes there is room for improvement so, when the time came to make these improvements, the E model was born. The B-47E came equipped with more powerful version of the General Electric J47 turbojet and Rocket Assisted Take Off packs that had 18 or 30 rockets that were jettisoned after use. It also had 20mm cannons located in the tail instead of .50-cal machine guns. It also had the upgraded avionics system that included the A-5 fire control system.

If you would like to see a B-47 up close in personal there are several museums around the United States that have them on display. Check out any one of these nine museums, Castle Air Museum in Atwater, California, Eighth Air Force Museum in Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, Grissom Air Park-Heritage Museum Foundation in Grissom AFB. Indiana, Little Rock AFB, Arkansas, March Field Air Museum in Riverside, California, McConnell AFB, McConnell AFB, Kansas, Plattsburgh AFB, New York, Strategic Air Command Museum in Ashland, Nebraska, and the United States Air Force Museum in Wright-Patterson, Ohio.
