This supersonic research project was the first aircraft to reach and exceed the speed of sound. This aircraft then became known as the X-planes, which were a series of American experimental aircrafts that were designated for testing new technologies. This project was kept highly secret. On October 14, 1947 the first Bell X-1 became the first aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound. The X-1 was piloted by U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager. During this flight the X-1 reached a speed of 700 miles per hour which is also known as Mach 1.06. Captain Yeager named the airplane “Glamorous Glennis” after his wife. Glamorous Glennis flew a total of 78 times. On March 26, 1948 she reached speeds of 957 miles per hour which is Mach 1.45 at an altitude of 71, 900 feet. The Bell X-1 is 30 feet 11 inches long and 10 feet tall, with a wingspan of 28 feet. Her empty weight is 7,000 pounds and her max takeoff weight is 12,250 pounds. Her max speed was 957 miles per hour and her range was 5 minutes (powered endurance).
