The A-26 Invader was also known as the “Whistler’s Mother." This aircraft was a light bomber that was first introduced in 1944, during combat in Europe. This plane soon got the reputation of being a rugged and dependable aircraft. So it was used for level bombing, rocket attaches and ground strafing. However, in 1948 the A-26 was renamed the B-26. The newly named B-26 was then used in the Korean Conflict, but this time the aircraft was used as a night intruder to harass the North Korean’s supply lines. This great aircraft served its country for the third time in the Vietnam conflict. During this time the U.S.A.F. had 40 modified B-26B’s modified with larger engines. These planes where then called B-26K, which was specifically designed for special air warfare missions. Then in 1966, the government decided to rename the B-26K to the A-26A.

Now let’s get to the specifications of this awesome aircraft. It could hold up to 3 crew men. It was 50 feet long, 18 feet 3 inches tall, with a wingspan of 70 feet. Its empty weight was 22,850 pounds, load weight was 27,600 pounds and max weight was 35,000 pounds. The A-26 could travel up to 355 miles per hour and have a range of 1,400 miles, service ceiling was 22,000 feet, and rate of climb was 1,250 ft/min. There was 8x0.50 in M2 Browning machine guns in the nose, 6x0.50 in M2 machine guns in the wings, 2x0.50 in M2machine guns in remote-controlled dorsal turret, 2x0.50 in M2machine guns in remote-controlled ventral turret. Lastly but not least 6,000 pound worth of bombs, a 4,000 pound bomb in the bay and 2,000 pounds of bombs on the wings.

This great, durable and extremely dependable aircraft flew in over 60,000 combat sorties and amazingly we only lost 56 of them to enemy fire. The A-26 Invader aircraft is also best known for dropping the first and last bombs over Korea. The last combat mission that the A-26 ever flew in was in 1969.
