This was true for the Sentimental Journey as well. She rolled off the assembly line at Douglas in late 1944. Since she couldn’t be used, she was assigned to the Pacific theater for the rest of the war. Sentimental Journey saw the light of day again in 1947 when she was taken out of storage in Japan and was taking to Clark Field in Manila to be used as a photo-mapping plane, where she stayed for three years. After she served as a photo-mapping plane, Sentimental Journey was transferred to Eglin Field, Florida. Once there she was converted to an air-sea rescue craft. After her service was through being an air-sea rescue craft, she was once again converted into something else. The Sentimental Journey participated in “Operation Greenhouse”, which was the forth postwar atmospheric nuclear weapon test series. She was used as a “mother ship”, which is a plane already airborne that would come up from behind a drone, take control of it and fly the drone to a specific area. In 1959 military orders were cut and Sentimental Journey was stored at Davis Monahan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. She didn’t stay there long; she was acquired by the Aero Union Corporation of Chico, California and became a civilian aircraft. On January 14, 1978 the newly formed Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force announced that Sentimental Journey had been donated to them. The Arizona Wing went through desperate lengths to restore this plane back to the way she was when she rolled off the assembly line. It took many years and several speed bumps but they were finally able to do it. The Sentimental Journey now plays an active role in air shows all around United States. This is how she got her famous name. A local contest was held that resulted in more than 800 entries to name the Sentimental Journey, as you very well know Sentimental Journey was chosen for the name of this unbelievable airplane. The decision was also made to have the most famous pinup picture of World War II painted on her nose for the nose art. Permission was granted and Betty Grable was put on the nose in her most tantalizing pose. If you would like to see Sentimental Journey you can visit her at the Arizona Wing. If you can’t make it there you can view of slideshow of her. References: http://www.arizonawingcaf.com/slideshows/B-17%20Inside/B17inside.htm http://www.arizonawingcaf.com/pages/aircraftsj.html
