B-17g Flying Fortress Bit O' Lace Airplane Article:

Bit of Lace

The B-17G was first introduced into the Flying Fortress production line in July of 1943. One of the new features on this B-17 was that the machine guns were permanently enclosed behind windows instead of being mounted behind removable hatches. By doing this it reduced the draft a little in the rear fuselage. The three manufactures made sure that the new B-17 had plenty of defensive firepower on board. They had no less than 13 .50 inch machine guns, two chin guns two “cheek” guns, two guns in the dorsal turret, two guns in the ventral turret two guns in the waist, two guns in the tail, and one gun in the roof of the radio operator’s position.

The B-17G Flying Fortress was built in massive numbers. The Boeing Company built 4,035; the Douglas Company built 2,395 and 2,250 by Lockheed-Vega. The very last B-17G was delivered on April 13, 1945. One of the most famous B-17G Flying Fortress’s was the “A Bit-O-Lace”, but by her crew and her fans she is known as Miss. Lace. Miss. Lace’s crew consisted of 10 crew men. Warren Bates the pilot, John H. Bauman the co-pilot, Luther ”ike” Eisenhart the navigator, William Rhodes the bombardier, Daniel De Tullio the top turret, Harry Doung on the radio, Robert Vogt on the ball turret, Claude Cluck and Beth Liss as waist gunners, and William Sonneborn as the tail gunner. This crew flew 83 successful missions. Sadly, Miss Lace was scrapped in Kingman Arizona on July 4th 1945.
