Sadly, this great aircraft was delivered too late to see any action in World War II. None the less this airplane has had an interesting history. Since the Aluminum Overcast never got to see any action in the war it was mainly used as a cargo hauler, an aerial mapping platform and also participated in pest control and forest dusting applications. A group called “B 17’s Around the World” decided to purchase the airplanes in 1978 and return to their military roots. There ultimate goal was to restore this old bomber to its former glory. Unfortunately, they were not able to maintain enough funds to properly restore this aircraft and donated it the B-17 to the Experimental Aircraft Association in 1983. The full restoration was finally completed in 1993. The deiced the Aluminum Overcast should proudly carry the colors of the 398th Bomb Group of World War II, which successfully flew hundreds of missions over Nazi-held territory during the war. The Aluminum Overcast commemorates a B-17G which was shot down on its 34th combat mission over Le Manio, France on August 13. 1944. Also veterans of the 398th helped finance and restore this wonderful comber. The Aluminum Overcast was 74 feet 4 inches long, 19 feet 1 inch tall, with a wingspan of 103 feet 9 inches. Its service ceiling was 35,600 feet. Its empty weight was 34,000 pounds and gross weight was 65,500 pounds. Its fuel capacity is 1,700 gallons. Its range is 1,850 miles. The max speed is 300 miles per hour, with a cruising speed of 170 miles per hour and the rate of climb was 37 minutes at 20,000 feet. The Aluminum Overcast was equipped with 13 Browning M-2 .50calibeer machine guns. The fire rate of this gun was 13 rounds per second. It also carried 8,000 pounds of bombs.
