B-24J Tubarao Aiiplane Article:

The replacement of the already great and well loved B-17, the B-24 Liberator came into production on 1939 and was introduced to the world in 1941. The main reason for this plane's existence was to have an aircraft that had a very long range. The B-24 Airplane lived up to her reputation and gained a distinguished war record with her operations in European, Pacific, African and Middle Eastern theaters. Due to her long range capabilities the B-24 Liberator was also used for maritime patrol, antisubmarine work, reconnaissance, tank, cargo and personal transport.

There were 18,475 B-24 Liberator made but telling them apart was easy with the all popular nose art each one adorned or each squadron adorned. One of B-24’s had the name of Tubarao, which means shark in Portuguese. This particular B-24 completed her 20th mission and was declared “war-weary” and in January of 1945. She was converted into the 491st third assembly ship. Also, she replaced the B-24J Rage in Heaven, which had crashed and been destroyed.

The B-24 Liberators stood 18 feet tall and 57 feet 8 inches long with a wingspan of 110 feet. Her empty weight was 36,500 pounds and her max takeoff weight was 65,000 pounds. She could reach speeds up to 290 miles per hour and had a service ceiling of 28,000 feet. Her armament consisted of 10x .50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns, short range 8,000 lb bomb, long range 5,000 lb bomb and a very long range 2,700 lb bomb.
