B-24J Liberator "Dragon and His Tail" Article:

The B-24 heavy bomber first came about when the Army Air Corps wanted a newly designed bomber that could exceed the performance of the already great B-17. Consolidated Aircraft was awarded the contract of this new aircraft in March 30, 1939. Amazingly, only nine months later, on December 29, 1939, the first prototype flight took place on the B-24.

This great American Bomber holds the record as the most produced American combat aircraft of World War II and, interestingly enough, it still holds the record as the most produced U.S. military aircraft to this day. The B-24 is often compared to the B-17, even though the B-24 can reach higher speeds, has a greater range and has a slightly higher bomb load capacity. Oddly enough these aspects of the B-24 didn’t seem to matter to most since people tended to care more for the B-17. Maybe it’s because the B-24 had a huge tendency to catch fire. Crewman also complained that the B-24 is harder to fly than the B-17. Nevertheless, the B-24 also call the Liberator, provided an excellent service in a number of ways thanks to the large payload and the range of the aircraft.

The only B-24 Liberator that can still fly today is owned by the Collings Foundation. They named this incredible aircraft “The Dragon and His Tail” after the real “Dragon and His Tail” which was a B-24 Liberator that had the most colorful painted insignia of any aircraft during World War II. You can see The Dragon and His Tail at your local air shows, so be sure to check local listings at this site http://www.collingsfoundation.org/cf_schedule-wof.htm.
