Moby Dick Airplane Article:

The B-24 Liberator is a long range heavy bomber that the United States produced in abundance for World War II to replace the already great B1-17. This B-24 was used in every combat operation during World War II. The reason this plane was used so much is because it has unbelievable range.

Its claim to fame was the famous raid against North Africa against the oil industry in Ploesti, Rumania on August 1, 1943. The B-24 Liberator was also a great airplane that could make long over-water missions in the Pacific. Production ended on this great plane in May of 1945, and a staggering number of 18,475 B-24’s had been made.

It is very typical for crew’s to be distinguished by the nose art on their airplanes. Well in the case of the B-24 Liberator known as “Moby Dick” the whole squadron adorned the same nose art. The 320th Bomb Squadron had a shark’s mouth painted on the nose.

The B-24 Liberators stood 18 feet tall and 57 feet 8 inches long with a wingspan of 110 feet. Her empty weight was 36,500 pounds and her max takeoff weight was 65,000 pounds. She could reach speeds up to 290 miles per hour and had a service ceiling of 28,000 feet. Her armament consisted of 10x .50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns, short range 8,000 lb bomb, long range 5,000 lb bomb and a very long range 2,700 lb bomb.
