It was also the most produced American aircraft with more than 10,000 of them produced. The B-25 Mitchell first came about because the USAAC wanted a twin engine medium attack bomber. However, the B-25 didn’t get off to a great start. A few redesigns had to be made after the first prototype flew in January of 1939. The first B-25 finally went into service for the US Army Air Corps at the end of 1940. Even though this great aircraft was designed to bomb from medium altitudes in level flight, she was frequently used for other purposes. She was often used on treetop-level strafing and parafrag missions against Japanese airfields. She was also used for skip-bombing missions against the Japanese shipping in the effort to try to re-supply their land-base armies. The B-25 also played a huge role in pushing the Japanese back to their own home islands. Surprisingly, several of the B-25 Mitchells survived the war and have been restored today and many of them are on display, one of the being the B-25 known as “Show Me”. She is owned and operated by The Missouri Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and is available for air shows, flybys and even movies.
