B-26 Marauder Yankee Guerilla Aircraft Model Article:

The B-26 Marauder was one of many Medium bombers that saw service in World War II for the United States. Unlike other medium bombers, the Marauder got off to a real rough start. They survived no more than four official inquires. Because of this, the planes were grounded and production was stopped. Fortunately, the B-26 was able to escape this untimely death. She was able to prove herself by recording the lowest loss rate of an American Medium Bomber in the War.

She did a have a few flaws just like anything, one being she was very difficult to fly. The reason she was so hard to fly was that she had a high take off and landing speed due to her high wing load. Additionally, because of this, she had a high rate of accident. If you wanted a B-26 flown you needed a very experienced pilot behind her controls.

She finally saw service in the spring of 1942, when most of the planes were assigned to theaters in England and the Mediterranean area. She had a very successful run in the war and had the lowest loss rate of any allied bomber. At the end of World War II she had flown in more than 110,000 sorties and had dropped a total of 150,000 tons of bombs. Her production was halted in 1945 and 5,266 B-26 had been manufactured.

Sadly, not all the B-26’s have a successful story. The B-26 known as the “Yankee Guerrilla” did not make it back from the war. She survived 130 missions but on October 5, 1944 the Yankee Guerilla crashed and burned in Rethondes, France killing four crew members and seriously injuring three crewmen.
