B-29 Super Fortress Enola Gay Model Aircraft Article:

The Enola Gay is probably one of the most famous B-29 Superfortress’s out there. Her claim to fame is dropping the first atomic bomb, that was code-named “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Some might wonder how this famous plane got her name. Well she was named after Enola Gay Tibbets, who is the mother of the pilot Paul Tibbets.

The Enola Gay was one of only 15 B-29 Superfortress’s that were equipped with the “Silverplate” modifications that was necessary for them to deliver nuclear weapons. She was built in Omaha, Nebraska by Glenn L. Martin Company, which is known as Outfit Air Force Base now. She was actually hand picked from the assembly line by Colonel Paul W. Tibbets Jr on May 9, 1945 to be the plane he would fly for the atomic bomb mission.

On August 30, 1946 the title of the Enola Gay was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute and was removed from the USAAF inventory. From 1946 all the way through 1961 the Enola Gay was put in temporary storage facilities at a number of different locations. She ended up at the Smithsonian storage facility on July 21, 1961, where she sat until she was partially restored in 1984.

The Enola Gay’s cockpit was put on display at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in 1995. However, the exhibit caused a lot of controversy over the original historical script they displayed. In 2003 the entire Enola Gay was restored and sent to NASM’s new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where you can see her on display today.
