The C-47 that the British and Commonwealth used took on the nickname Dakota. The C-47 was used mostly by Allies during World War II and stayed in front line operations through the 1950’s, there are only a few that remain in operation to this day. The C-47 was mainly used during World War II to transport troops, cargo and the wounded, there were over 10,000 of them manufactured. The C-47 was a huge success to Allied campaigns at Guadalcanal and in the jungles of New Guinea and Burma. The C-47 made it possible for the troops to counter their mobility of the light-traveling Japanese Army. The C-47’s were also used to airlift supplies to embattled American forces during the Battle of Bastogne. The most important role of the C-47 was flying The Hump from India into China, where the lessons learned from that trip would later help with the Berlin Airlift. The C-47 is 17 feet tall and 63 feet and 9 inches long, with a wingspan of 95 feet and 6 inches. Her max takeoff weight is 31,000 pounds and her max speed id 224 miles per hour. Her payload can hold 6,000 pounds of cargo and has the capacity to hold 28 troops and it takes a crew of three to run her. References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Dakota
