Unfortunately, the C-46 is most commonly forgotten because she was overshadowed by the more famous Douglas C-47 Dakota transport. The C-46 initially began her life as a commercial airliner aircraft with pressurized cabins. However, in September of 1940 the US Army Air Corps got wind of this aircraft and ordered 200 of them to be modified to fit their needs. The very first commando was delivered to the US Army Air Forces on July 12, 1942 and many more followed after that. Curtiss then started focusing on building the modified CW-20B’s that the US Army Air Force gave the name of C-46 to and stopped building the C-46’s as commercial aircrafts. Today there are only a dozen or so of the C-46’s still flying. You can catch one of two that have been obtained by the Commemorative Air Force at air shows around the United States. One of them is a silver C-46 with USAAF markings on it and has the name “China Doll” written on the nose. China Doll was also once known as “Humpty Dumpty” References: http://www.vectorsite.net/avc46.html
