Grumman came up with a design, that was later redesigned and had some modifications done to the airframe and the ultimately won the contract and the prototype from the F4F Wildcat was under way. The very first Wildcat flew on August 20, 1940 and was powered by a Pratt& Whitney R-1830 engine that had 1,200 horsepower. It wasn’t until the F4F-4 was made and included folding wings, six guns and self seating fuel tanks did it earn the name Wildcat. As the war raged on around the world the Wildcat became very popular and she built s nice reputation for herself. The F4F Wildcat is 28 feet 9 inches long and 9 feet 2.5 inches tall with a wingspan of 38 feet. Her empty weight is 5,760 pounds and her max take off weight is 7,950 pounds. Her max speed is 318 miles per hr at 20,000 feet, with a cruising speed of 155 miles per hour. Her armament consist of Six 12.7-mm (0.50 in) Browning machine guns (FM-2 had four guns) Two 100-lb bombs (FM-2 could carry two 250-lb bombs).
