The Corsair is the longest production run of any piston-engine fighter in the United States history. She flew from 1942-1952.) Her roles for the United States Navy and United States Marie Corps were a carrier-capable aircraft. There were a total number of 12,571 F4U’s built including all models and it cost a whopping $1,500,000 to make just one. One of the different models of the F4U that were made was the F4U-1A. This plane was equipped with a new “Malcolm” hood that had only two struts. The cockpit seat was raised which allowed the pilot to see over the nose of the plane. The F4U-1A was 33 feet 4 inches long and 16 feet 1 inch tall with a 41 foot wingspan. Her empty weight was 8,982 pounds and her loaded weight was 14,000 pounds.
