AVRO Lancaster Article: Camouflaged Lancaster When the British where given the difficult mission to destroy Germany’s dams in the Ruhr Valley, the green and brown camouflaged heavy bomber Avro Lancaster, was called upon. This handy aircraft is what gave the British the power they needed to penetrate the German air defenses during the mist of World War II. The Lancaster’s claim to fame is its ability to carry 18,000 plus pounds of bombs at a range of 1,660 miles. During the infamous raid on the dams of Ruhr Valley in May of 1943, the Lancaster dropped “bouncing bombs” that would skip on the water before hitting its target. During this war the nearly 7,366 Lancaster’s totaled 156,000 sorties which estimates to about 608,000 tons of ordnance that was dropped on the enemy. The great bomber was not only used for bombing missions it also was used for maritime surveillance, photo reconnaissance missions and later in its life used as an engine test bed platform. The Lancaster saw its final airtime in February 1946, however, the Lancaster managed to see the light of day when it was used for several civilian guise and as a warplane sold to different nations. You can still see camouflaged Lancaster’s today several were preserved and can be seen at museums. However, only 2 of the surviving Lancaster’s can actually fly under their own power to air shows. There is one in Canada and one in the United Kingdom. This wonderful bomber is 69 feet and 5 inches long, and stands 19 feet and 7 inches tall, with a wingspan of 102 feet. Its empty weight was 36,828 pounds and its load weight was 63,000 pounds. Its max speed was 280 miles per hour with a range of 2,700 miles with the capability of going 3,000 miles with a minimal bomb load. Its service ceiling was 23,500 feet. The Lancaster came equipped with 8x 0.303 inch Browning machine gun in three turrets and a max of 22,000 pounds of bombs, but normally carried 14,000 pounds of bombs.
