Halifax Aircraft Article:

Handley Page manufactured the Halifax bomber in 1939. She was one of the British’s front-line, four-engine heavy bombers that the Royal Air Force used during the Second World War. She remained in service until the end of the war. She preformed a variety of duties in addition to her original purpose of bombing.

The Halifax made her maiden flight on September 24, 1939 but wasn’t introduced to the world until November of 1940. She was produced from 1940-1946 and at the end of production 6,176 Halifax’s had been built. During service for the RAF the Halifax flew in 82,773 operations dropped 224,207 tons of bombs and lost 1,833 aircraft. In addition to her bombing duties the Halifax also was used for a gilder tug, electronic warfare and special operations.

The Halifax was 71 feet 7 inches long and stood 20 feet 9 inches tall with a wingspan of 104 feet 2 inches. Her loaded weight was 54,400 pounds. She could fly as fast as 282 miles per hour and her range was 1,860 miles. Her armament consisted of 8x .303 in Browning machine guns 1x .303 Vickers K machine gun and 13,000 pounds of bombs all of this was done by a crew of 7. As of today there are only 2 fully restored Halifax’, one is in the Yorkshire Air Museum and the other at the World War airfield.
