Zero Zeke Airplane Article:

I’m sure we all can remember the day of Infamy, December 7, 1941, the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Well one of the planes that was used in this horrible attack was the Mitsubishi A6M Zero also known as “Zeke” which was its official allied code name.

This lightweight, carrier-based fighter aircraft was the best carrier-based fighter plane in the world and was extremely feared by Allied pilots. By the time 1942 rolled around Allied pilots were able to engage the Zero on more equal terms, thanks to new tactics and techniques.

However, by 1943 the Americans and British were producing fighter planes with far more firepower, armor and speed. So by the time 1944 came along the A6M was completely outdated, but it remained in production. During the final years of the War in the Pacific the Zero’s were mainly used for kamikaze operations much like they were for Pearl Harbor.

The Zero was produced from 1940-1945 and 11,000 of them were manufactured. This great little plane was ahead of its time in many ways. It gained a legendary reputation for its excellent maneuverability and its very long range and was also known as one of the finest fighters of its era. Like all good things they must come to an end and the Zero became subject to design weakness and couldn’t keep up with the more powerful aircraft engines that other fighter planes had.

This legendary plane was 29 feet and 9 inches long, 10 feet high, with a wingspan of 39 feet 4 inches. Its empty weight was 3,704 pounds, with a max take off weight of 5,313 pounds. It never exceeded 410 miles per hour, it had a range of 1,929 miles with a service ceiling of 33,000 feet. It carried 2 x 7.7mm Type 97 machine guns in the engine cowling and 2 x 20mm Type 99 cannons in the wings. It also carried 2x 60 pounds and 1 x 132 pound bomb and for the kamikaze attacks it was fixed with 2 x 250 kg of bombs
