The seaplane I am referring to is the A6M2-N with the allied code name of “Rufe.” This Interceptor/Fighter Bomber was a single crew seaplane that was based on the Mitsubishi A6M Zero Model. As one can guess this plane was built for the sole purpose of supporting amphibian operations and to defend remote bases. A total of 327 of these planes were built between December 1941 and September 1943. Interestingly enough the Japanese were the only nation to successfully produce and deliver a float equipped single seat interceptor fighter seaplane. The British Spitfire did not make it beyond the drawing board. These planes were mostly used to harass American PT boats at night, because they were very hard to detect, even with primitive radar. This one of a kind airplane didn’t have too much luck however. During the Battle of the Coral Sea almost all of the Rufes were destroyed. They had a little better success when they fought in the Aleutian campaign, but their losses soared again when the American fighter strength could be built up. During the final year of the year the Rufe was sent into battle as interceptors and suffered heavy losses. Let’s talk about the specifications of this one of a kind seaplane. It was 33 feet and 2 inches long, 14 feet and 1 inch tall, with a wingspan of 39 feet and 4 inches. It could reach 270 miles per hour, its cruising speed was 186 miles per hour, and its ceiling was 32,800 feet with a range of 715 miles. Its max range with max fuel was 1106 miles and its arrangement consisted of 2 x 20mm cannons, 2 x 7.7mm machine guns.
