She first made her appearance in early 1941 over the skies of France and she had a great stride for nearly a year as the Champion of the air until the Spitfire IX came along. There were many variants made of the FW 190 one being a pure fighter, another one was a ground-attack fighter/bomber and the third was a close-support aircraft. However, there were only 40 different versions of the FW 190 that were produced with different combinations of engines, armaments, systems, roles and wings. Her claim to fame was her great advances in technology and her design as an aircraft during that time. As with any plane, there are different fighter squadrons that have different names to help identifiy them. One of the great German Squadrons was the Green Hearts. They, of course, had a green heart painted on the side of their planes so people would recognize them. One of the greatest pilots that flew a Green Heart was Otto Kittel. He totaled 227 confirmed victories during the War while flying with the Green Hearts, making him one of the greatest FW 190 Aces. The FW 190 was 29 feet 1.5 inches long and 13 feet tall with a wingspan of 34 feet 5.5 inches. Her empty weight was 6,989 pounds and her max takeoff weight was 10,802 pounds. Her max speed was 408 miles per hour and her range was only 500 miles. Her armament consisted of two 7.92-mm (0.31-inch) machine guns in nose, up to four 20-mm MG 151 guns in wings. The Focke-Wulf FW 190 had a wide range of underwing and under-fuselage bombs, guns and rockets. There were about 20,051 FW 190’s built and out of all of those only one is still airworthy.
