A5M Claude Airplane Article: To be an effective airplane, size doesn’t always matter. This was very true for the Mitsubishi A5M which was the world’s first monoplane shipboard fighter and is the direct ancestor of the world famous Mitsubishi A6m “Zero”. This little plane was given the allied code-name of “Claude”. This plane was primarily used in Japan. The A5M took its first flight on February 4, 1935 and to great belief exceed most expectations, especially in the speed department it attained 270 miles per hour. This was great back in the 1930’s. After some minor tweaks, the small aircraft entered service in early 1937 and fought air battles at the start of the second Sino-Japanese War, which was a war between China and Japan. Also, only 1,094 of these little guys were built. After the “Claude” left combat for good a new and improved two-seated training version was created. So at the end of the war all of the remaining A6M’s were put towards kamikaze attacks. The “Claude” truly laid the foundation for one of Japan’s most famous and most successful fighters. Now let’s talk about the specifications of this little guy. The A5M was only 24 feet and 10 inches long, 10 feet and 9 inches tall, with a wingspan of 36 feet and 1 inch. Its empty weight was 2,681 pounds and loaded weight was 3,694 pounds. The max speed as mention above was 270 miles per hour, with a range of 746 miles, service ceiling of 32,150 feet.
