P-12 History: The Boeing P-12 also known as a F4B was an American pursuit aircraft that was owned and operated by the United States Army Air Force and United Stated Navy. The P-12 made her maiden flight in 1929, but was first introduced in 1930. The P-12’s were developed as a private venture to replace the F3B and F2B. They were smaller, lighter and more agile than the ones she replaced. Due to these modifications the P-12 had a higher top speed and her overall performance improved. The P-12 was produced between 1929 and 1932 with a total of 366 built. The P-12 is known as one of the best Air Crops fighter planes of the entire inter-war period. The P-12 remained in service with the first-line pursuit groups until she was replaced by the Boeing P-26s in 1934 and 1935. However, she was not scrapped after service with the Air Force, she was used for training duties until 1941. After that most were grounded and sent to mechanic schools. The P-12 was 20 feet 4 inches long and stood 9 feet tall. She had a wingspan of 30 feet. Her max speed was 189 miles per hour and her range was 570 miles. Her armament consisted of two .30 cal machine guns or one .30 cal and one .50 cal machine gun and she carried 244 pounds of bombs. If you would like to see a P-12 today you can see one at the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton Ohio.
