P-26 History: The Boeing P-26 aircraft was the first all-metal production fighter airplane and was also the first pursuit monoplane that was every used by the United Stated Army Air Force. The P-26 was giving the nickname of “Peashooter” She was first flown in 1932 and was used by the Air Corps as last as 1941 in the Philippines. All in all there were only 151 Boeing -26’s produced. The P-26 was without a doubt the Army Air Corps front-line fighter for years before it was replaced during 1938-1940 by the Curtiss P-36A and the Seversky P-35. However, the P-26 didn’t just get scrapped she was sold to China and to the Philippines. Unfortunately, during a battle against Japan in December of 1941 all of the P-26’s were destroyed. Just like every plane that the American’s own the crew gives them a nickname so they will stand out in a crowd of the same planes. Well one of the P-26’s was well known as “Bucking Mule” Although no one really knows what happened to the Bucking Mule, she probably went down in combat like almost all the P-26’s. But if you would like to see a Boeing P-26 in person you can see one at the National Museum of the USAF they have a P-26A on display in its Early years Gallery.
