Albatros D III “Flower” Model Airplane, Gray-Red/Blue-Green CamouBuy Now!
Albatros D III “Flower” Model Airplane, Gray-Red/Blue-Green Camou The easy to fly and effective combat aircraft Albatros D. III was a fighter biplane aircraft used mainly by the Imperial German Army Air Service as well as the Austro-Hungarian Air Service. This plane saw most of its action during the First World War. Its name to fame was during the German aerial dominance known as “Bloody April” in April of 1917. Although, the D III did have a few design flaws, one being the constant wing failure. Even after the problem was addressed they still managed to have too many wing failures, which was the result of poor workmanship and materials that were used. With all of that aside many of the flying aces managed to do their jobs extremely well flying the D III’s. Unfortunately, despite the large production numbers of this plane only two have survived, both of them are the D. VA models. One is at the Australian War Memorial Museum in Canberra, Australia. The other is in the National Air and Space Museum; sadly it is not on display. Several of the Albatros became famous with their distinct emblems that were painted on the side of their planes. One being the Gray-Red/Blue-Green Camouflaged D III that had a yellow and white Edelweiss flower painted on the fuselage. The pilot that flew this plane was Otto Kissenerth. He was one of three German Aces that were glasses during the war. He obtained more than a dozen victories flying his Edelweiss D III. The Albatros D. III was 24 feet long, 9 feet and 6 inches tall, with a wingspan of 29 feet and 5 inches. Its empty weight was 1,532 pounds and its loaded weight was 1,949 pounds. The D III max speed was 108.5 miles per hour and its range was 300 miles, with a service ceiling of 18,044 feet. The only weapons that were aboard the D III was 2x 7.92 mm LMG 81/15 machine guns.
