Fokker Dr. 1 Model Airplane Article:

The Fokker Dr. 1 Triplane is probably the most famous and recognized airplane of World War One. There were only a small number of these famous planes that were built, three hundred and twenty to be exact. These planes were first delivered to Manfred von Richthofen’s Jagdgeschwader I in later August of 1917. The most famous Fokker Dr. I Triplane the “Red Baron” took the aircraft number of 102/17 on September 1st, 1917 and very promptly shot down a British airplane. However, there were some problems with this great airplane. The whole fleet was grounded on November of 1917 due to some structural problems that needed to be worked out. These problems were fixed within a month and the airplanes were back in the air.

The Fokker Dr. I was designed by Reinhold Platz and was manufactured by Fokker-Flugzegwerke. She saw her first flight on July 5th, 1917. Her primary user was Luftstreitkrafte. The typical markings on a Dr. 1 were streaky olive-brown camouflage paint over the factory light blue finish and the different squadrons would add their own distinctive unit markings on the tail spinner.

The Dr. I was 9 feet 8 inches tall and 18 feet 11 inches long with a wingspan of 13 feet 7 inches. Her empty weight was 895 pounds and her loaded weight was 1,292 pounds. Her maximum speed was 115 miles per hour and her range was only 185 miles. Her armament consisted of 2 x 7.92 mm machine guns and she was flown by a crew of one.
