Grumman F3F Airplane Article:

The Grumman F3F was the last biplane fighter that the U.S. Navy used. Even though the plane before her the F2F had some serious performance problems and poor directional stability and spinning due to the very short fuselage she had. The Navy thought she had potential and a great design and would make a great fighter plane. Corrections were made to the fuselage and it was stretched 22 inches and her wing area was expanded 30 square feet. They first prototype of the F3F flew on March 20, 1935 but two days later she was destroyed as she put on the breaks during a terminal velocity test.

By the time 1941 came around none of the F3F’s were in service but 117 of them had been distributed to different bases around the country for training purposes and transport duties. The last of the F3F’s to retire was the F3F-2 in November of 1943. She was produced from 1936-1939 with a grand total of 147 of them built. Back in 1935, it cost $20,424 to build just one.

The F3F was 23 feet 2 inches long and 9 feet 4 inches tall with a wingspan of 32 feet long. Her empty weight was 3,285 pounds and her max loaded weight was 4,795 pounds. She had a max speed of 264 miles per hour, with a cruise speed of 150 miles per hour with a range of 980 miles. As of today there are only four F3F’s that are still airworthy, one of them being at the Lone Star Museum.
