About the Nieuport 17c.1, Circa 1916, Silver Wood Model Airplane: Royal Air Force, Nieuport 17C Bi-Plane. Our Nieuport model is hand carved and hand finished, made of solid mahogany. All details are hand painted, no decals are used. Our prop driven torpedo plane is made of solid kiln dried mahogany. Camouflage colors. Made in 1:19 scale. Size is 12.0 inches long with a 17.5 inch wingspan. Furnished with desk stand. Nieuport 17c.1, Circa 1916, Silver Wood Airplane History: The Nieuport 17 was a French based biplane fighter aircraft that was used during World War I. She was manufactured by The Nieuport Company in 1916. She saw her first flight in January of 1916 and was introduced to the French Front in March of 1916. The Nieuport 17 was built to replace the existing Nieuport 11. The 17 came equipped more powerful engines and a better structural design. She was first given a 110 horse powered Le Rhone 9J engine, but she soon was upgraded with the 130 horse powered 97 kW engine. She was known for her great maneuverability and her outstanding rate of climb. During this time in 1916 the Nieuport 17 was superior to any British fighter out there. But by the time the mid 1917’s rolled around the Nieuport 17 was a little outdated and was getting winged out of service. After she came off the front lines she was used as a trainer aircraft. The Nieuport 17 was 19 feet long and stood 7 feet 10 inches tall, with a wingspan of 26 feet 9 inches. Her empty weight was 827 pounds and her loaded weight was 1,235 pounds.
