Fairey Swordfish Airplane Article: The Faiery Aviation Company built the Fairey Swordfish, which was a torpedo bomber that was used by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy during World War II. She was lovingly known by her crew as “Stringbag”. She quickly became outdated by the end of 1939, but during her time of service she achieved some spectacular success. Her claim to fame was destructing the Regia Marina in the Battle of Taranto and the famous crippling of the Bismarck. The Fairey Swordfish was designed by Marcel Lobelle and made her maiden flight on April 17, 1934 and she was first introduced to the world in 1936. Her main roles were a torpedo bomber but in her later years she was used for anti-submarine services. She was retired on May 21, 1945 and there were roughly 2,400 of them built. The Swordfish was 35 feet 8 inches long and stood 12 feet 4 inches tall with a wingspan of 45 feet 6 inches. Her empty weight was 4,195 pounds and her max take off weight was 7,720 pounds. She reached speeds of 138 miles per hour and her range was 546 miles. Her armament consisted of two 7.7-mm (0.303-inch) Vickers machine guns (one forward-firing and one, one in a Fairey High-Speed Mounting in rear cockpit); plus one 1,600-pound torpedo, or 1,500 pounds of depth charges, bombs or mines; or up to eight rockets on underwing racks. It took a crew of three to fly and operate this aircraft, the pilot, observer and a radio operator/rear gunner. As of today there are only 4 still airworthy.
