I. The D I is a single-engine, single-seater fighter biplane. It was also known as the Berg D. I and it was also called the Berg Fighter, because it was designed by Dipl Ing. Julius von Berg. Berg first started working on the first prototype of the D I in August of 1916. Sadly, the maiden flight of this plane killed its pilot, so further modifications were made. It seemed like Berg had made a home run with the newly modified D I. It was reasonably fast, had great flying characteristics and maneuverability and could reach higher altitudes than most planes out there. It also had a lot roomier cockpit which gave the pilot a better field view. Despite all those great features, the D I still had its problems which were found out in the fall of 1917. For one, the machine guns were installed too far for the pilots to reach and if the gun jammed, they were out of luck. But the main complaint of this aircraft was the engine tended to over heat. Even with all those problems the Austro-Hungarian Air Force continued to widely use the D I until the end of World War I. The Aviatik D I was 22 feet and 9 inches long, 8 feet 2 inches tall, with a wingspan of 29 feet 3 inches . Its empty weight was 1,475 pounds with a gross weight of 1,878 pounds. Its max speed was 115 miles per hour and it range was about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It was equipped with 2 Schwarzlose 8 mm machine guns.
