Beech an aircraft executive started a projected that many looked down upon to build a large, powerful, fast biplane that was to be built for the business executive. Well, despite what everyone else thought, the Beech Model 17 made her maiden flight on November 4, 1932. This plane was known as the “Staggerwing” because the top wing was set or staggered behind the bottom wing. Sales of the Model 17 started out really slow. The first year only 18 were sold. However, that soon began to change as time went on. The Staggerwing made her presence known in air racing. An early Model 17 won the 1933 Texaco Trophy Race. And in 1935, Captain H.L. Farquhar, had successfully flown around the world in one totaling 21,332 total miles. The Staggerwing also played her role in World War II. The Second Spanish Republic used a number of Model B17l’s as bombers. And the Chinese used many Staggerwings as ambulance planes against their fight with Imperial Japan. In 1949 the last Staggerwing was rolled out of the plant totaling 785 that were every built. This great plane was 26 feet 10 inches long and stood 8 feet tall, with a wingspan of 32 feet. Her empty weight was 2,540 pounds and her loaded weight was 4,250 pounds. Her max speed was 212 miles per hour with a range of 670 miles.
