Air Force One History:

Air Force One

The title Air Force One is the air traffic control call sign of any United State Air Force aircraft that is carrying the President of the Untied States. However, since 1990 the presidential fleet only consists of two specially configured extremely customized Boeing 747, with tail numbers 28000 and 29000. Although an aircraft is only called Air Force One when the president is onboard, this term is still used to describe either on of the aircrafts.

In October of 1962 the Kennedy administration took delivery of a new modified long-range 707-Speical Air Mission also known as SAM 26000. It was then that the customization of Air Force One began. Kennedy didn’t like what was being done so he called upon wife Jacqueline and she contacted French born American industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Loewy is responsible for putting the presidential seal on both sides of the fuselage near the nose and a large American flag on the tail. He also made sure on each side of the plane that it read United States of America. His unbelievable work got praise from the president, media and the jet become an icon.

The SAM 26000 was in use from 1962 to 1998, and served Presidents Kennedy to Clinton. But the plane was replaced by another Boeing 707, Special Air Mission 27000 in 1972. Richard Nixon was the first president to use the new aircraft. SAM 27000 was replaced by two 747 jumbo jets SAM 28000 and 29000 in 1990. President George W. Bush decommissioned SAM 27000 in 2001. She was then taken to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley where she is currently on display today.
