The TriStar was only the third wide-body passenger jet airliner to enter operation behind the Boeing 747 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Just like the DC-10 the TriStar operated with three engines. Sadly, enough Lockheed has plans to make more than 500 of the TriStars but stopped at 250 because they found they were not making profit off the airplanes. The TriStar L-1011 was use by many commercial airliners during its day, one of them being Trans World Airlines. Trans World Airlines is actually responsible for heralding the TriStar as being one of the safest airplanes in the world. At least that is what their promotional literature claimed in the 1980’s. The L-1011 TriStar was 177 feet 8 inches long and stood 55 feet 4 inches tall, with a wingspan if 155 feet 4 inches. Her empty weight was 224,579 pounds and her max take off weight was 430,000 pounds. Her max speed was Mach 0.90 and her cruising speed is Mach 0.86. Her crew consisted of three people and she could hold up 253 in 3 classes. References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_L-1011
