She was considered one of the biggest aircraft of her day and her main use was to be able to fly across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Twelve of these massive Clippers were built for Pan American World Airways. One of them was the “Yankee Clipper” The Yankee Clipper, just like her sister airplane the “Dixie Clipper,” opened the northern passenger route on July 8, 1939 carrying a total of 17 passengers at the same fare as the Dixie Clipper. Its cost was $375 one way, which is $4,000 in today’s money, or $675 round trip, which is $7,000 to $8,000 in today’s money. The Yankee Clipper was also used for another wonderful service. She was the first scheduled trans-Atlantic flight to deliver mail. Sadly, her life came to an end on February 22, 1943 when she crashed and sank in the River Tagus near Lisbon, Portugal.
