The 314 Clipper was one of the largest aircraft of its time. Her massive wings came from the earlier XB-15 bomber prototype to help her achieve the range that was necessary for her to fly across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Boeing Company built twelve Clippers for Pam American World Airways, one of them being the “Dixie Clipper” The Dixie Clipper was the first 314 Clipper to carry scheduled passengers across the North Atlantic. Twenty-two lucky individuals had to chance to do so on June 28, 1939. They paid $375 for a one way ticket which is equitant to $4,000 in day’s money or they had the option of paying $675 for a two way which is about $7,000 to $8,000 in today’s money. The Dixie Clipper also had another claim to fame as being the first presidential airplane. On January 14, 1943 President Roosevelt was flown on the Dixie Clipper to the Casablanca Conference, to meet with Churchill and Stalin. Sadly, the Dixie Clipper was scrapped in 1950.
