DC-3 Gooney Bird History:

The Douglas DC-3 is responsible for rewriting the rules of commercial air transportation. The DC-3 helped the airplane industry to be able to carry enough people fast enough so that the operator could actually make a profit. This was a novel concept at this time because no one had yet to figure this concept out. It’s been reported that by 1940, nearly 80 to 90% of all airline passengers in the United States rode on a DC-3.

When World War II came about, the DC-3 was kicked into high gear. It’s estimated that only 455 DC-3’s had been made for the airliners at that time. Before that war was over nearly 10,000 Gooney Birds had been built in America alone, with Russia making a thousand more.

Today, there is one Delta Airlines Gooney Bird still flying the skies. The “City of Atlanta” DC-3 Gooney Bird makes her home at the Jackson Hartsfield International Airport where she was given her certificate of airworthiness from the FAA on October 26, 1999.
