Ford Tri-Motor Airplane Article:

The great mastermind Henry Ford was responsible for the Ford Tri-Motor aircraft that was given the nickname of “The Tin Goose”. Henry decided to build this American aircraft in hopes of building a whole new market for airline travel. Ford even made it a point to make sure the passengers where more comfortable during flight and included an enclosed cabin for them.

A total of 199 Ford Tri-Motors were built between 1926 and 1933, including 79 of the 4-AT variant, and 117 of the 5-AT variant, plus some experimental craft.

The Tin Goose was first produced in 1925 but she didn’t make her first debut flight until June 11, 1926. The production of this one of a kind aircraft lasted until June 7, 1933, with a total of 199 of them been built. In 1933 it cost $42,000 to make just one of the Tin Goose. These airplanes were very popular with the military as well as airlines all over the world. It is estimated that 100 different airlines throughout the world used The Tin Goose back in the days.

The Tin Goose was 50 feet 3 inches long and 12 feet 8 inches tall with a wingspan of 77 feet 10 inches. Her empty weight was 7,840 pounds and her loaded weight was 10,130 pounds. Her max speed was 150 miles per hour and her cruise speed was 90 miles per hour with a range of 550 miles. Her capacity was eight passengers and her crew consisted of 3 including a flight attendant.

Regarding its design, it represented a "quantum leap over other airliners", and this was one of the key ingredients to the immediate impact and success within the commercial aviation industry.
