She was the very first turboprop airliner that was built in the United States. She first flew in 1957. The L-188 Electra’s role was a short-medium-range transport aircraft. A total of 170 L-188 Electra’s were produced from 1957-1961. Lockheed first started to design the L-188 in 1954, and shortly after American Airlines received the launch order of the L-188. American Airlines was the first commercial airliner to receive an L-188 Electra and they became her primary users. American Airlines along with a handful of other airliners that used the L-188 retired them in the mid 1970’s. However, in 1983 the military modified several of the L-188 Electra’s and used them for maritime patrol. The L-188 Electra is 104 feet 6 inches long and stands 32 feet tall and had a wingspan of 99 feet. Her empty weight is 61,500 pounds and her max take off weight is 116,000 pounds. She cruises at speeds of 405 miles per hour and her service ceiling is 28,400 feet. Her crew consists of 6 people and can hold 99 to 127 passengers.
