Length: 15" Wingspan: 4" Scale: 1/41 Includes desk stand. CH-47 Chinook History: The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a very versatile, twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy lift helicopter. She was the fastest helicopter in her day reaching speeds of 196 miles per hour in the 1960’s. Her main role to the United States Army is to move troops, artillery emplacement and resupplying the battlefield. The Chinook is a very popular helicopter that was sold to 16 nations but the United States is the largest Chinook user. The Chinook is equipped with two turboshaft engines that are mounted on either side of the rear end of the helicopter and are connected to the rotors by driveshafts. Because of the counter-rotating rotors it eliminates the need for an anti-torque vertical rotor, so all the power can be used for lift and thrust. Another great feature she has is if one engine fails, the remaining engine is capable of driving both rotors. The Chinook first saw action in Vietnam in late 1965. She was the standard troop transport used by the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. She was also called to use in 1991, during the Gulf War. A 163 Chinook’s served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Of course she saw wide use in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. She was used for air assault mission, inserting troops into fire bases to later bring food, water and ammunition. References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CH-47_Chinook
